MTG - Kinan, Bonder Prodigy cEDH Deck Guide

Quick Links

cEDH is like the “extreme sports” version of Magic: The Gathering’s usually more relaxed Commander format. It’s all about optimizing your decks and crushing your opponents’ dreams. In this wild world, one of the top contenders is Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy.

Kinnan is the kind of deck that ramps up so fast, it’s like driving a rocket-powered shopping cart. With its Simic color identity, you have access to all the best ramp spells and counterspells to make sure your game goes according to plan.

Key Cards

Thrasios, Triton Hero Image: Thrasios, Triton Hero by Josu Hernaiz

These cards are the backbone of the deck, the MVPs that make it all possible.

Kinnan, Bonder’s Prodigy

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy

Kinnan is the engine that drives this deck. Its two abilities are crucial. First, it gives extra mana to nonland permanents when tapped. That means there are plenty of opportunities for infinite combos with mana rocks. Second, Kinnan lets you put non-Humans onto the battlefield with infinite mana, which allows you to play through your entire deck and eventually get Thrasios, Triton Hero, who’s basically a walking library.

Mana Rocks And Mana Dorks, like Bloom Tender, Elvish Mystic, and Fyndhorn Elves, are essential for Kinnan’s abilities. They help ramp up your mana and get the engine running smoothly.

Tutors

Green Sun’s Zenith

In cEDH, combos are everything, and Kinnan is all about those combos. That’s why the deck runs creature tutors like Invasion Of Ikoria, Green Sun’s Zenith, and Finale Of Devastation. These cards let you fetch the specific creatures you need for your combos. And to make things even easier, you have Tezzeret The Seeker, Transmute Artifact, and Fabricate to grab your precious mana rocks.

Card Draw

Mystic Remora

Simic is all about card draw, and Kinnan takes full advantage of it. Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Consecrated Sphinx, and Sylvan Library are just a few of the ways you can keep your hand full and find those combo pieces. With cards like Brainstorm and Pull From Tomorrow in your arsenal, you’ll never run out of gas.

Winning With Kinnan

Thassa’s Oracle Image: Thassa’s Oracle by Jesper Ejsing

Kinnan is a combo deck that’s built to accelerate like a cheetah on roller skates. You’ll create an infinite amount of mana, and from there, the possibilities are endless.

With all the counterspells at your disposal, your opponents will have a better chance of winning the lottery than comboing off against you. Just make sure you have enough free counterspells, like Fierce Guardianship and Force Of Will, to stop them in their tracks.

Here are some of the combo pieces and how they work:

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy + Mirage Mirror + Basalt Monolith + Any land 1. Have Kinnan on the battlefield. 2. Use Basalt Monolith’s ability to tap and add three colorless mana. 3. With Kinnan’s help, you now have four mana. Use three of it to untap Basalt Monolith. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create infinite colorless mana. 5. Use Mirage Mirror’s ability to copy Basalt Monolith. 6. While holding priority, use Mirage Mirror’s ability to copy a land. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 infinitely to create a stack of Mirage Mirror constantly switching between a copy of Basalt Monolith and a land. 8. When Mirage Mirror becomes a land copy, tap it to add colored mana. 9. When Mirage Mirror turns into Basalt Monolith, use its ability to untap itself. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to convert your colorless mana into infinite mana of any color.

Hullbreaker Horror + 2 Mana Rocks 1. Have Hullbreaker Horror on the battlefield. 2. Cast any spell, targeting one of your mana rocks with Hullbreaker’s ability to return it to your hand. 3. Tap the mana rock for mana before it returns to your hand. 4. Cast the mana rock again, and use Hullbreaker’s ability to return the second mana rock to your hand. 5. Tap the second mana rock for mana before it returns to your hand. 6. Repeat steps 3-5 to create infinite mana from your mana rocks without Kinnan’s help.

Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal (Optional: Copy Artifact/Phyrexian Metamorph + Swan Song) 1. Cast Isochron Scepter, imprinting it with Dramatic Reversal. 2. Tap all your mana-producing nonland permanents to add mana to your pool. 3. Use Isochron Scepter’s ability, casting Dramatic Reversal for free to untap all nonland permanents. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create infinite mana. 5. Cast Copy Artifact/Phyrexian Metamorph and have it enter the battlefield as a copy of Isochron Scepter. 6. Imprint the copy of Isochron Scepter with Swan Song. 7. Use the Isochron Scepter imprinted with Dramatic Reversal to cast it for free. 8. Use the Isochron Scepter copy to counter it with the imprinted Swan Song, creating a 2/2 bird token. 9. Use the infinite mana from step 4 to repeat steps 7 and 8 and create an infinite number of Bird tokens.

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy + Thrasios, Triton Hero + Thassa’s Oracle 1. Create infinite mana. 2. Use Kinnan’s ability to put non-Human creature cards onto the battlefield from the top five cards of your library. 3. Keep using this ability until you can put Thrasios, Triton Hero onto the battlefield. 4. Use Thrasios’ ability to scry one and reveal the top card of your library. This allows you to put a land onto the battlefield or draw a card. 5. Use this ability to draw your entire deck and put all your lands onto the battlefield. 6. Cast Thassa’s Oracle, winning the game with its alternate win condition.

How To Pilot Kinnan

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy Image: Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy by Jason Rainville

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy cEDH decks are like card advantage machines. They’re explosive and can turn the tides in a single turn. With plenty of counter magic, you can shut down your opponents’ combos and keep yourself safe.

When starting a game, you’ll want ways to get ahead of the curve with mana dorks and mana rocks. Since Kinnan is so easy to cast, getting it out early can lead to combo wins before your opponents can even process what’s happening. Don’t be afraid to mulligan if you don’t have these key pieces.

Even if Kinnan gets removed from play, you don’t need to worry too much about commander tax. Your infinite mana combos will keep the engine running smoothly. So go ahead and be aggressive with casting Kinnan; it won’t stay off the battlefield for long. And since most of your combos can happen instantly, they’re fairly resistant to common forms of interaction.

Your main win condition will likely be Thassa’s Oracle. With your ability to create infinite mana, you can go through your entire deck thanks to Kinnan’s ability. Another way to win is by flooding the battlefield with tokens or locking it down with Hullbreaker Horror and a copy of Isochron Scepter imprinted with Dramatic Reversal to repeatedly bounce everything.
